Heliconias are a wonderful plant to have in your garden. In Florida our experience thus far has been this.... give proper light requirements , palm tree fertilizer, and room to grow. They do great in a container and their flowers last long in a vase. Some species may die back from frost if left unprotected in a container. Planting in the ground will help. I recommend to mulch heavily. Regardless, the plant will reappear vigorously in the spring if it dies back. Grow in well-drained soil and be sure the plant does not sit in water because this will cause the rhizomes to rot.
